A homeless man said he robbed a bank Tuesday in Orange County, Calif. because he wanted to get arrested and receive much-needed shelter and medicine — in jail.

James Lannon, 55, told police that he wanted to go to jail because he had been spending the cold nights on the streets and because he needed heart medication that he could no longer afford, ABC reports.

Lannon said he decided to rob the Wells Fargo bank on Westminster Boulevard by handing a note to the teller. Then, according to FBI agent Chris Gicking, employees hit the floor after the teller turned around and told them: “We’re being robbed,” the Associated Press reports. Lannon then took a seat in the lobby and waited, unarmed, for police.

Lannon hasn’t been connected with any other robberies but he did have several arrest warrants and is being held on $100,000 bail, KPCC reports.

Unfortunately, his story is not unfamiliar. In May, a man in Georgia who was hungry and homeless threw a brick at a courthouse building so that he could get “a sandwich and a drink” in jail.

In 2011, a man named James Verone handed a note to a bank teller that read, “This is a bank robbery, please only give me one dollar.” Then he sat in a nearby chair and waited for the police. Verone said that he did it for the health care he desperately needed for a growth on his chest, two ruptured disks and a problem with his left foot.
