Time for a makeover: ASUU plans national education summit

by Godwin Akanfe

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is planning a national summit on education to chart a better path for the sector. The ASUU President, Dr Isa Fagge said in Lagos on Monday that the union would organise the summit in collaboration with other genuine education stakeholders.

Fagge said that the summit was being planned in line with the Federal Government’s effort to sanitise the education sector.

“We are optimistic that the summit will hold during the first quarter of this year, but where this is not feasible as a result of some bottlenecks, it will not go beyond the second quarter,” he said.

He also said that the summit would provide a platform for the stakeholders to brainstorm on ways to turn around the sector for facilitated development.

“ASUU is convinced that there is a need for all stakeholders to come together and look at activities in the sector holistically.

“At the end of the summit, we must have laid a solid foundation for the rebirth of the sector, which will go a long way in repositioning the country’s growth.”

Fagge added that Nigeria might not achieve the desired transformation until it properly addressed pressing issues in the education sector. He said that Nigeria had the potential to realise its Vision 20:2020, but required intensified efforts by government at all levels and the citizens.

He then urged federal and state governments to rebuild the sector by putting necessary machinery in place.
