Labour Unions Demand Minimum Wage Hike to Combat Inflation

Amid rising inflation rates, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) have called for an increase in the minimum wage from ₦70,000. At a press briefing in Abuja, TUC President Festus Osifo argued that annual adjustments to wages are essential to prevent workers from falling further into economic hardship.

Labour leaders warned that failure to address the issue could result in widespread strikes, as many Nigerian families are struggling to cope with the rising cost of living.

The unions have also demanded legislative action to make periodic wage reviews mandatory.

Tinubu Vows to Address Rising Food and Drug Prices in 2025

President Tinubu acknowledged the hardships faced by Nigerians due to escalating prices of staple foods and medications in his New Year message.

Speaking from Abuja, he outlined measures to stabilize the economy, including increased funding for agricultural initiatives and leveraging credit systems for small businesses. Tinubu emphasized that his administration is committed to easing the financial burdens on families, ensuring food security, and reducing inflationary pressures.

His speech offered a glimmer of hope to citizens, although some remain skeptical about its implementation.

Shittu, SAN, Proposes Reforms to Revive Public Confidence in Nigeria’s Judiciary

Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Wahab Shittu, addressed the judiciary’s tarnished reputation during a legal forum in Lagos. Shittu highlighted how corruption and inefficiencies have eroded public trust in the judicial system.

He proposed reforms such as merit-based appointments, better funding, and stricter adherence to ethical practices. Shittu argued that transparent processes and continuous training for judicial officers would significantly improve the judiciary’s perception.

His recommendations were well-received by participants, who acknowledged the need for systemic changes to restore confidence in the courts.

NAFDAC Destroys ₦120 Billion Worth of Substandard Products to Protect Consumers

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) undertook an aggressive campaign to eliminate counterfeit and substandard products.

In a December operation in Ibadan, Oyo State, NAFDAC destroyed over ₦11 billion worth of unregistered and expired drugs. NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, emphasized that these efforts aim to protect Nigerian consumers from harmful goods.

She called on the public to report suspicious products and urged manufacturers to adhere to regulatory standards. This large-scale destruction follows a six-month period during which over ₦120 billion worth of products were confiscated and incinerated.

President Tinubu’s New Year Address Sparks Mixed Reactions Across Nigeria

In his 2025 New Year speech, delivered from the Presidential Villa in Abuja, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu pledged to tackle the surging costs of food and essential medications.

He announced plans to boost agricultural productivity and support small businesses through initiatives like the National Credit Guarantee Company.

While some Nigerians praised his commitment to economic stabilization, others criticized the address as overly ambitious, pointing to unfulfilled promises from the past year. The speech has since become a point of contention, illustrating the divide in public trust towards the administration.
