Nigeria records Africa’s biggest petrol price rise in 2026
Nigeria recorded the highest increase in petrol prices in Africa during the first half of 2026, with pump prices rising by 39.5%, according to a report by the Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria.
The report said the conflict involving Israel, Iran and the United States disrupted global oil supplies, pushed crude prices above $100 per barrel, and forced oil tankers to take longer routes, increasing transport costs.
MEMAN said Nigeria’s deregulated petrol market passed the global price shock directly to consumers, making the country the hardest hit on the continent despite its growing domestic refining capacity.
‘Jumanji: Open World’ trailer teases thrilling final adventure
The first trailer for Jumanji: Open World has been released, giving fans a glimpse of the action-packed final chapter of the popular film franchise. Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan and Alex Wolff all return for the movie, which arrives in cinemas on Christmas Day 2026.
The trailer shows Spencer Gilpin enjoying the holidays with family when a rhinoceros suddenly crashes into a restaurant. He soon discovers the familiar Jumanji characters have escaped into the real world and are trapped in “demo mode”. The story follows their mission to return to the game while swapping bodies with people from Spencer’s life.
Inspired by Chris Van Allsburg’s 1981 children’s book, the franchise began with the 1995 film starring Robin Williams before being revived with Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle in 2017 and Jumanji: The Next Level in 2019.
Reps probe dollar charges on locally refined fuel
The House of Representatives has begun moves to tackle growing concerns in Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector, opposing the use of US dollar charges on locally refined petroleum products and launching an investigation into alleged irregularities in fuel import licence allocations.
During a meeting with industry stakeholders, the House Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream) said it would invite key agencies, including the NMDPRA, NUPRC, NPA, CBN and refiners, as part of efforts to reform the sector and amend the Petroleum Industry Act.
Committee Chairman Ikenga Ugochinyere described dollar-denominated port charges on locally refined fuel as harmful to the economy, warning that the practice contributes to higher petrol prices for Nigerians.
Tems to lead soundtrack for ‘Children of Blood and Bone’
Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Tems has been named executive music producer and curator for the soundtrack of Paramount Pictures’ upcoming fantasy film Children of Blood and Bone. The announcement was made by director Gina Prince-Bythewood during the film’s trailer launch in New York, making Tems the first woman to executive produce a soundtrack of this scale.
The director revealed she listened to Tems and Burna Boy while writing the screenplay, making their involvement a natural fit. Tems’ hit song Me & U features in the film’s teaser, while her manager confirmed she also recorded three original songs for the soundtrack.
The soundtrack will also feature Burna Boy, who serves as executive music consultant, alongside Ayra Starr, Fireboy DML and BNXN, bringing together some of Nigeria’s biggest music stars for the highly anticipated film.
Davido unveils star-studded tracklist for ‘Oriadé’
Davido has revealed the tracklist for his upcoming sixth studio album, Oriadé, ahead of its release on Friday, July 31, 2026. The 13-track project marks 15 years since the Afrobeats star began his professional music career and reflects on his journey to global success.
The album’s title, Oriadé, combines the Yoruba words ori (destiny) and adé (crown), symbolising fulfilled purpose. Davido said the project revisits the sound that launched his career while celebrating resilience, ambition and personal growth.
Oriadé includes the previously released singles “I Know Who I Be” featuring JAZZWRLD and GL_Ceejay and “Gimme Dat Ting” featuring NO11. The album also boasts collaborations with Black Sherif, Mayorkun, Fola, Leon Thomas, Aya Nakamura and Llona.
