Troops arrest fake currency merchants in Bauchi, Kano

Troops of 33 artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army have arrested seven fake currency merchants in Bauchi and Kano states.

Assistant Director, Army Public Relations Officer, Major Joseph Afolashade while parading the suspects at the brigade headquarters said the troops got a tip-off.

He revealed that soldiers dressed in plain clothes, stormed the busy Wunti Market on March 31, 2017, and arrested one Mallam Idris Hassan in the process.

Afolashade said, “As of the time of his arrest, he was in possession of N21, 000 fake (N1, 000) currency notes. He claimed that the fake currency notes were given to him by one Mallam Auwal Wanzam, who resides in Bauchi.”

He said four other suspects – Mallam Sani Ibrahim, Abdulahi Suleiman, Zubairu Ya’u and Isyaku Hardo were also apprehended.

Afolashade added that the sum of N26, 000 fake currencies were also recovered from them.

He said preliminary investigations revealed that they also have a syndicate group in Kano State, where one Malam Abubakar Musa was eventually arrested.

He revealed that the suspected gang leader and the printer of the syndicate, Malam Suleiman Abubakar was still at large.
