Donald Trump selects Kirstjen Nielsen as Secretary of Homeland Security

In a latest development from the White House, President Trump has selected Kirstjen Nielsen, a top White House aide and a former homeland security official in the George W. Bush administration, to lead the Department of Homeland Security, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders confirmed in a tweet.

Ms. Nielsen, a national security expert until her appointment served as Principal Deputy White House Chief of Staff to President Donald Trump since September 6, 2017 and would replace John F. Kelly, who left the department in July to serve as Trump’s chief of staff  in the White House.

Nielsen served as Mr. Kelly’s chief of staff at the Homeland Security department, and followed the former military general to serve as his No. 2 when the president picked him to serve in the West Wing.
