At least one student has been reported dead following Wednesday’s protest by students of the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

On Thursday, the state police commissioner, Umar Gwadabe, who confirmed the death also said that 45 students were arrested in connection with the disturbance which also led to the burning of the Vice-Chancellor, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Exams/Records and Council Affairs offices.

According to reports, students had been protesting the introduction of fee in their General Studies and also an increment in bus fare.

The Registrar of the institution, Edak Umondak, said the school had not given permission to any policeman to shoot students.

Hard disks were reported missing from computers in the Computer Maintenance Department, 12 vehicles were vandalised, and the Finance and Accounts, students accounts, and cash offices broken into.

“If not for the prompt response of the police, students from Calabar and Bida, who infiltrated the UNIUYO students’ population, would have unleashed mayhem on the city of Uyo,” Gwadabe said.

Branch Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Universities, UNIUYO, Anyim Nwachukwu, was also disappointed by the incident.

“What we know for now is that there was crisis in the campus yesterday. But from the information we received, some lives were lost. The students in turn razed school property,” he said.

“We discovered that some offices of my colleagues had been broken into and some things stolen. We can’t still be definite about the damage.”

  1. Why should the schl authority invite d police in first place? The way u handle a situation will determine the result. Police claim “we are here 2 prevent d riot from escalating into town” throwing carnister tear gas into schl compound. Was the students embark on riot or a peaceful protest over N2000GST and N200 fees which was never agree upon? Why should police erupt d peaceful protest with tear-gas and shut atleast one student dead?if not that d student died i don’t thnk any building would have been razed. To me, the management Lack what i call “STATISTICAL CONSULTANCY”that wil tell them how, where or when can we top money inorder 2 avoid anger of d students.THE SIMPLE REMEDY WAS TO ADD THE LITTLE MONEY IN THEIR SCHL FEES. Even u self after u don pay schl fee finish deycomsay pay this or that u go vexmen!
