Department of Homeland Security has mandated the 280 airports that host direct flights to the U.S. to have explosives-detecting scanners within 21 days.
According to Fox News, memo sent from the International Air Transport Association to carriers, U.S officials have given the 180 affected airlines a period of four months to incorporate security measures such as more intensive passenger screening and monitoring planes on the ground.
The memo also said foreign airports that failed to install explosive-trace detection scanners could face a ban on carrying laptops into the cabin or even be suspended from flying to the U.S. Department Homeland Security will work with airlines that are unable to install the machines promptly as possible.
Secretary for Homeland Security John Kelly, warned months ago that terrorists are planning to take down a plane with explosives in a laptop. Kelly banned the use of personal electronic devices in the cabins of planes flying to the U.S. from 10 airports in the Middle East and North Africa.
