Mildred Okwo’s upcoming movie La Femme Anjola is film noir, which has been in development for some time and recruits top-tier actresses Joke Silva and Rita Dominic, and also Nonso Bassey. Okwo, who directed The Meeting, 30 Days, and Surulere loves genre filmmaking and her latest project evokes the rich mood of old Nollywood revolving around the femme fatale archetype – a beautiful but mysterious woman with insidious intentions.
The plot details about La Femme Anjola is sketchy, a tale about the Nigerian dream but the teaser released recently puts a frame on the story. Rita Dominic, duh, is the titular Anjola and I love the way the camera lingers on her as she puffs out cigarette smoke, making her powerful and enigmatic. Bassey plays the (unfortunate) male character that will fall for her, and the movie doesn’t try to hide that fact there will romance and sex.
Despite the disappointing churn of movies from Nollywood this year, there are a few that I’m still looking forward to and Okwo’s La Femme Anjola is one of them. No release date has been announced yet but we await a full trailer.
