Why we commend NAFDAC’s new whistleblowing policy

The Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Christiana Adeyeye on Monday, called on Nigerians to report any form of illegal drug production in their environments.

Highlights:

  • Adeyeye made the call at the ongoing 8th Annual Symposium of the Health Writers’ Association of Nigeria (HEWAN) in Lagos with the theme “The Menace of Counterfeit Drugs, the Role of Regulatory Bodies’’.
  • We are calling on the public to blow the whistle whenever they discover any form of illegal manufacturing or production of drugs within their vicinity. Blow the whistle; most of these illegal productions of drugs are done in the night. We will ensure utmost confidentiality. NAFDAC will neither relent nor waver in the fight until the battle is won,” she promised.
  • She highlighted strategies being used by NAFDAC to eradicate drug counterfeiting to include sustained public enlightenment and collaboration with national and international agencies.

One more thing: The Chairman, Board of Trustees, HEWAN, Dr Emmanuel Enabulele said that with adequate collaboration, Nigeria would win the fight against drug counterfeiting.

What we think: This issue of illicit manufacture and importation of drugs is no longer news and so, it is commendable that NAFDAC has finally appealed to the public to join the fight against it.

This idea started with the looted funds and some monies have actually been recovered through that, especially the money found in an unclaimed Ikoyi house and similar recoveries like that.

So, tapping into this idea might actually reduce unnecessary deaths, both those that have been reported and those that the media fails to see.
