Singer Mary J. Blige is not wasting any time disproving rumors that she is in financial jeopardy. It has been alledged that Blige was millions of dollars in debt and facing lawsuits. But that did not seem to be on the singer’s mind on Tuesday, in NYC.Blige was seen sporting a new huge and glamorous blond afro. Blige is wearing the afro for the new film she is shooting called, Black Nativity. The film which co-stars Jennifer Hudson, Angela Bassett, and Forest Whitaker centers around a young teenage boy who is sent to stay with his grandparents in New York, whom he has never met. Written by Langston Hughes, Black Nativity was first performed, Off-Broadway on December 11, 1961.
The Classical Theatre of Harlem revived the musical with Andre De Shields(The Wiz and Ain’t Misbehavin’)on Broadway, in 2007.It was one of the first plays written by an African American to be staged Off- Broadway. Blige plays an angel in the film. Hudson plays the mother of the teenage boy and Whittaker and Bassett play his grandparents.
Blige and Angela Bassett were just recently seen in the Lifetime film, Betty and Coretta, which centered around the lives of the widows of the late Malcolm X and Martin Luther King. This is not the first time that Mary J. Blige has appeared in a musical adapted for film. The singer/actress played Justice Charlier in Rock of Ages,opposite Tom Cruise. She also played a club singer/ bar owner in Tyler Perry’s Bad All By Myself.
Behind the scenes Blige was responsible for musical contributions to the soundtrack of Bobby and The Help. Both earned her Golden Globe nods.
