YNAIJA2015: Hotel scarcity in Osogbo as election day draws near

by Adedayo Ademuwagun

Hotels in Osogbo have been fully booked up ahead of the upcoming governorship election in the state.

Due to the influx of people into the town concerning the election, rooms in most hotels in Osogbo are booked already. At some hotels our journalist visited, there were a few rooms left, while some other hotels visited were having to turn patrons away for lack of room.

At the Networth Hotel and Suites, the receptionist told our journalist they had no rooms left, and all rooms were snapped up earlier this week.

A receptionist at another hotel said their rooms had been fully booked since last week.

“You know there was a APC rally yesterday and before that there was the PDP rally. Politicians have been coming from Lagos, Abuja and other places to support their candidates.”

At some hotels visited, our journalist saw policemen and men in vehicles with “PRESIDENCY” on their number plates.

One hotel receptionist says most of the people who checked in at their hotel recently were SSS officers.

There were also journalists, election observers and government officials.

At one hotel, our journalist found that prices for rooms had gone up 20%, and an employee tacitly admitted that the influx caused by the election is responsible for the rise. But some hotels say that although they have enjoyed increased patronage lately in connection with the election, it has not affected their pricing.

The election will be held this Saturday, 9 August, in Osogbo, the state capital, and the rest of the state.
