Budget padding: ‘I have been justified’ – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, on Monday, said that the recent accusation of budget padding by the House of Representative has justified his stance that the National Assembly is filled with corrupt persons.

Speaking after his close door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Obasanjo noted that the best solution was to ensure that only people of intergrity were elected into the National Assembly.

Obasanjo, who was accompanied by one of his daughters for the meeting with Buhari, further said that people who didn’t believe him in the past will do so now.

He said, “Well, if there are people who didn’t believe what I said in the past, then you now say that what has come out confirms what I said in the past. Then, I can say that what I said in the past is what I will say now.”

On whether there should be an investigation into the matter, Obasanjo said: “It is not a question of investigation. We should get men and women of integrity into the place and the President should be very vigilant; whatever should not pass should not pass.”

The former President noted that he visited Buhari to deliver messages from the leaders of Liberia and the Gambia.

He also said that he updated the President about his visit from Seychelles Island, where he attended this year’s Annual General Meeting of African Export Development Bank.

“Travelling is a good education. What you will learn about a country by visiting that country for two or three days, you won’t learn by reading books,” Obasanjo said
