Aye Dee’s numbered tweets and 6 other things we’ll (really) miss from the election campaign

by Kolapo Olapoju

The electioneering and campaign period which led to the announcement of Muhammadu Buhari as President-elect, was filled with immense entertainment, absurdities, sheer mendacity and sometimes, outright buffoonery.

In spite of the pervading apprehension and over-heated polity of the past few months, Nigerians will certainly miss the campaign phase and all/whom it takes with it.

Here are 7 people/things we would miss the most from the campaign period.

1. Tunde Goma’s mails
Sir Tunde Goma came into the consciousness of our mail-boxes in late December, and ever since until recently, we and many others were daily bombarded with flurry of mails from the incognito personality.

We had no idea who he/she was, but he/she was a part of our lives for almost three months.

Every influential figure on New media, social media, entertainment and some key youth figures got mails from Sir Tunde Goma and at some point his/her mail thread became a forum of sorts.

We will miss Sir Tunde Goma… but not the mails.

2. Patience Jonathan’s speeches
The outgoing First Lady of Nigeria has always been an animated character who has a flawed grammar as well as a skewed personality.

Hence, it was surprising that she didn’t become a prominent feature in her husband’s campaign until during the 6-week extension period, but alas, when she came, everyone felt her presence.

Her speeches created headline stories, controversies, punch-lines and immense amusement among the populace, yet she remained on a roll.

From her terrible attempts at making analogies to her serious fear of prison, Patience Jonathan will be greatly missed… but not for long.

3. Aye Dee’s numbered tweets
Mr Aye Dee- real names; Mukhtar Alexander Dan’Iyan, is known for three things
1. For his infamous role in the temporary crash of the blog-site of Linda Ikeji.
2. For once supporting the All Progressives Congress and later camping under the umbrella of the Peoples Democratic Party.
3. His famous numbered tweets.

Aye Dee’s numbered tweets became a regular feature on Twitter throughout the campaign period and it gained him a lot of following as well as enemies.

4. Omoni Oboli’s photos with GEJ

Nollywood actress, Omoni Oboli began her romance (no pun intended) with President Goodluck Jonathan when he hosted a private screening of her new movie ‘Being Mrs Elliot’at the presidential villa.

After that event, a photo of her blue plunging dress caused a lot of controversy, but that didn’t deter her from hanging out and taking further pictures with the president in the course of the campaign period.

A few were selfies, while some were pictures. They will be missed as well.

5. Fayose’s adverts
Ayo Fayose was one of the key figures of the PDP campaign despite not having an official position.

His own way of campaigning for President Jonathan was by releasing statements through his press secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun as well as putting out anti-Buhari and anti-APC adverts in national dallies.

While the former made substantial impact, the latter got everyone talking.

Repeatedly, the Ekiti state governor put out adverts against the then-opposition party. Sometimes, the adverts were utterly tasteless, other times extremely amusing.

We’ll certainly miss the adverts.

6. Garba Shehu’s 3-in-1 press releases

Three people put out the most press releases during the campaign period – Femi Fani-Kayode, Ayo Fayose and Garba Shehu.

However, Garba Shehu led the trio in the number of issued press releases.

During the electioneering phase, the spokesperson of the Buhari campaign organisation released more statements than we could keep track of.

He wouldn’t exactly be missed as we are certain he would be a constant feature in the new government.

7. Fani-Kayode’s farcical statements

Of all the riduculous and unbelievable statements that were put out during the campaign season, Femi Fani-Kayode won by a landslide… at least he won something.

Femi Fani-Kayode released several statements and most of them were just too hard to believe… we doubt he believed them himself.

Perhaps, the biggest lie Fani-Kayode told Nigerians was that the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, President Jonathan, was 2 million votes ahead in the polls.

Yep, you guessed right… BIG LIE
