President Trump’s lawyers are battling over the the extent of Trump’s cooperation with special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation, The New York Times report.
According to a Times source, Trump’s lawyer Ty Cobb was seen arguing with White House counsel, Donald McGahn about his variance with the latter’s response proposal to the investigation.
Cobb posits that the administration should make every relevant document and information available to Mueller, while McGahn and other White House officials wants a more restrained approach that could let Trump later assert executive privilege.
Cobb alleged that he believed one lawyer was a “McGahn spy” and that McGahn was restricting his access to some necessary documents. He also slammed a colleague for “earlier leaks” which he said “tried to push” Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner out.
In reaction to Cobb’s complaint and allegations, McGahn privately yelled at Cobb for publicly speaking about the private investigation. Chief of Staff John Kelly also reportedly rebuked Cobb.
McGahn who hired a lawyer last week as part of Mueller’s investigation would likely be queried about Trump’s decision to oust erstwhile FBI director James Comey and a White House’s statement about Trump Jr.’s meeting with a Russian lawyer during the 2016 election.
