‘I think me and you can start a fire/ burn the city down with our desire’, Omagz sings as an opener to follow a brief melodic intro by WavytheCreator. Omagz is a rapper naturally, but auto-tuned singing has surfaced across his catalog in the past with relative smoothness and “What You Like” is no less set on the same melting butter feel. With fast-paced snares and drums aligned with mid-tempo vocals. The harmony is simple but nearly too good to be true, especially when vocal samples of ‘I Know What You Like’ and bass drops are interloped with rhythmic mastery on Wavy’s outro chorus for resolute pop magic.
Contextually, “What You Like” is a flirtatious take on songs about winning new love. WavytheCreator’s subtle but effective presence is a soothing match to Omagz sensual propositions, some of it bordering on egocentricity rendered innocent by honesty when he sings ‘you don’t even know I’m not your type’. Love songs with a feel of the summer always carry this sort of mystery within. With shorter days and longer nights, summers come and go like a blur and soon all we’re usually have left with memories. Especially with attraction, as even true love is often rendered at the mercy of spontaneity, some of which Wavy encourages as she implores her partner ‘closer’.
Between late April and the end of August, twin mainstream hits from Davido with “Fall” and “If”, sleeper hit “Iskaba” from Wande Coal, as well as undercuts from projects by Wizkid and D’banj have become the biggest highlights of the summer. With soul at its heart and warmth across the composition, Omagz and WavyCreator’s “What You Like” is the right mid-August release to serve as a perfect addition and closer to that (compressed) playlist of some of the most noteworthy music released the past four months.
