A 31-year-old man, Nojeem Adeyemo, after being accused of infidelity by his wife, chopped off her right hand with a cutlass, which led to her death.

The incident occured on Sunday, 31 August at Orita area of Saki, Oyo State, after the couple got into an argument over the issue of his alleged unfaithfulness.

After returning from his farm, at around 10:00 am, he was accosted by his wife, Rukayat, who accused him of sending people to spiritually attack her in her dream.

She then proceeded to accuse him of being romantically involved with the wife of a man called Aluko. This led to a heated argument between them, during which the wife threatened to pack her belongings out of her husband’s house before he could kill her.

As she entered the house to carry out her threat, Nojeem followed her inside, where they got into a scuffle, which led to him striking and severing her right hand.

The neighbours were alerted to the scene of the crime after the woman screamed because of the pain. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, but because she had lost a lot blood, died before she could recieve medical attention. Her husband reportedly tried to flee, but was arrested by policemen of the Saki Division, after which the case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Iyaganku, Ibadan.

Adeyemo, while confessing, stated that his actions were not premeditated, but rather, as a result of his wife’s provocation.

He said, “we had been fighting for a long time, usually based on the notion that I engaged in extramarital affairs. It was her friends who were giving her false information that I used to bring women home whenever she was not around.”

“My wife had always accused me of having an affair with a neighbour but I have always denied the allegation. I also warned her to be wary of friends who were making her miserable by giving her false information, but she did not heed my warning. See what she made the devil to push me into.”

“The very day of this incident, I just returned from farm around 10 am, when she picked up another quarrel with me. One thing led to another and a fight broke out. She ran inside and I followed her. I didn’t know how she managed to collect my machete from me, saying she would kill me first before I kill her. I outwitted her, collected the machete and cut off her hand at a stroke. I regret it my action though. She was a good wife who used to take care of me whenever I had health problem. We have even just completed our new building.”

Oyo State Police spokesperson, Olabisi Okuwobi-Ilobanafor, confirmed the story, saying that the suspect would be subsequently charged to court.
