Anambra killing: The desecration of ‘God’s house’ by drug lords

by Wareez Odunayo

On Sunday, August 06, 2017, Ozubulu community of Anambra. South-East Nigeria was thrown into mourning as the lives of church goers were cut short by mindless lunatics. According to reports, the incident occurred when fully armed gunmen at around 6:30 am stormed St. Philips Catholic Church killing some worshippers.

But that’s not all. Apparently, the killing is not unrelated to a feud between two South African based drug lords from the community.

The gunmen were said to have been on the look out for one Chief Aloysius Ikegwuonu, who reportedly built the church for Nnewi Diocese. Many innocent people were caught in the web of a gang related violence they had no idea about. Aloysius’s father, Pa Ikegwuonu was said to be one of those killed during the attack.  was killed while his wife was shot

Clashes between gangs have always led to the death of the innocent. But the question remains, why did both men not settle their differences outside God’s house? Was the attack so urgent that it could not wait till after the Sunday service? Why choose to desecrate the church of God with such heartlessness? killed while his wife was shot

Security agencies also have a share of the blame. The swiftness with which they released a press statement on the killings is an indictment on the police’s integrity. Why did the police not avert the incident? What offence could Aloysious have committed to warrant such an attack?

It is rather unfortunate that two men brought home their power tussle and ended up being responsible for the death of many.

With this event, it is hoped that the Police will leave no stone unturned by bringing all the culprits to book and by ensuring that a repeat of such a dastardly act doesn’t reoccur.
