Anti-jungle justice bill passes second reading at Senate

A bill against “jungle justice” on Wednesday passed second reading at the Senate.

Senator Dino Melaye had sponsored the bill titled ‘Bill for an Act for the prohibition and protection of persons from lynching, mob action and extrajudicial executions and other related offences 2016’.

Melaye gave an example of the #Aluu4 where four students of the University of Port Hacourt were killed after falsely accused of theft.

He also mentioned a preacher who was killed while preaching at Kubwa in FCT.

Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio urged his colleagues to allow the bill to pass, though stating that it has to be fine-tuned.

The bill was later passed by Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu after it was supported by the Senators.

The bill was referred to the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters.
