Collapsed school in Osun

A newly completed building at Ejigbo High School in Osun State collapsed in the wee-hours of Wednesday, July 9, around 6am, an unfortunate development which has seen All Progressive Congress (APC), accusing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of orchestrating the unfortunate incident to score cheap political points as elections in the state draws nearer.

Surprisingly, the recently completed school was due for inauguration with Governor Rauf Aregbesola, at a campaign rally on Tuesday, July 8, calling it “one of the most beautiful schools in the country.”

Folasade Odoro, the Public Relations Officer of the State of Osun said the school building collapsed due to heavy wind.

Mrs. Odoro said that the preliminary investigation by the police revealed that the building collapsed following a heavy wind on Wednesday morning.

According to her: “The building collapsed due to heavy wind which blew this morning. Two artisans laying tiles sustained injuries. They were treated and have been discharged.”

The state government, however, released a statement through the Director, Bureau of Communications and Strategy, Semiu Okanlawon, saying, “The Government of the State of Osun regrets to inform members of the public about the suspect incidence of the collapse of the main hall of the newly completed ultra-modern Ejigbo High School.

“Information at the disposal of the government indicates that the main hall which had been completed along with other classrooms of the school came down at about 6am Wednesday after a loud bang.

“As a responsible government, it is too early for us to say what the exact cause of the collapse is until we have full investigations and advice of professionals. However, it must be stated here that all necessary quality assurance tests were carried out to ensure structural durability and integrity of the project.”

In another twist to the incident, Sunday Akere, the Commissioner for Information blamed the collapse on the PDP, saying that residents of the town claimed that low caliber explosive was used to blow up part of the structure.

Kunle Oyatomi, the Director of publicity, Research and Strategy of the All Progressives Congress also accused the Peoples Democratic Party of being responsible for the collapse.

“I can tell you this categorically that the PDP sabotaged the structure. Investigation is going on.”

Reacting to the development, the Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of allegedly using fake and substandard building materials in the construction of model schools in the state.
