APC Senators throw blows over Senate leadership positions

The All Progressives Congress, is at the moment caught in the middle of a storm that threatens its frail unity.

During a meeting of the caucus members of the party, to a select principal officers for the Senate, a pair of irate Senators, got into a physical confrontation and the meeting ended abruptly.

The Senators involved in the altercation of Tuesday, June 23, are;  Kabir Marafa and Tayo Alasoadura.

Vanguard reports that the parley meeting was held in Meeting Room 3:01, and about 40 Senators attended.

Leading the ‘Like Minds’- Pro-Saraki Senators, was Senator Danjuma Goje, while Senator Barnabas Gemade, Benue North East, led the loyalists of Senator Ahmad Lawan, who are known as Senate Unity Forum.

After declaring the meeting open, Senate President, Bukola Saraki begged his colleagues to try and reach an accord.

He was quoted to have said: “I appeal to you all to let us do those things that will unite us than do those that will divide us. For me, I am ready and desirous, as colleagues to work with all of you in order to provide that focused leadership in the Senate and National Assembly as an institution.”

However, the Senators weren’t buying, as Senators loyal to the Saraki insisted that principal officers should emerge through an electoral process, conducted by Zonal caucuses, which will submit the winners’ name to the Senate President for announcement at the next day of plenary.

The Unity Forum, would completely disagree, maintaining that only those nominated by the APC leadership for the offices should stand for election.

During the heated disagreement that ensued, Senator Marafa, who represents Zamfara Central and Senator Alasoadura of Ondo Central, got into a fight due to their difference of positions.

What could have ended very ugly was said to have been doused by Senator Rafiu Ibrahim (Kwara) and other some Senators.
