Appeal Court dismisses Amaechi’s appeal against Wike

An Appeal Court sitting in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, has dismissed the appeal filed by the immediate past governor of the state, Rotimi Amaechi, challenging the constitution of a judicial panel of inquiry by Governor Nyesom Wike to probe him.

Amaechi, who is the current Minister of Transportation, had also, among other prayers, challenged his invitation to the Justice George Omereji-led panel of inquiry.

The panel was set up by the state governor to, among other things, investigate the sale of some of the state’s assets by the immediate past administration.

Justice Simeon Amadi of the Rivers State High Court had earlier dismissed the suit filed by Amaechi challenging the right of the panel to probe his administration.

Delivering judgment in suit number CA/PH/342/2015, on Monday, the presiding judge, Justice O. F. Omoloye, dismissed all the pleas of the ex-governor, except one, which bordered on whether he (Amaechi) had the locus standi to institute a legal action against the constitution of the judicial commission of inquiry.

Justice Omoleye held that the state governor had the right to establish a commission of inquiry to investigate the sale of assets belonging to the state.
