Ayokunle Odekunle: Omisore is finished politically, GEJ will win in 2015 & 3 other lessons we learnt from Osun

by Ayokunle Odekunle

Iyiola-Omisore (1)

Hugely uncharismatic, perceived as arrogant and with his seemingly irredeemable image, many are of the opinion that it is high time he called time on his political career.

The Osun elections are over. There is a winner and several vanquished people. Already, some of the candidates for other parties have rejected the outcome of the elections. One of the, Alhaji Fatai Akingbade rather comically released a statement asking both the All Peoples Congress and Peoples Democratic Party (PDPs) candidates, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola and Iuiola Omisore respectively to concede defeat to him.

On a more serious note, there are lessons for all the parties in the elections to learn from. From the APC to the PDP and then to the Labour Party, there are lessons for everyone.

They are:

The APC have lost their invincibility

Before the elections, a lot of analysts had predicted a landslide victory for Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola. Why? This is because contrary to popular belief, Osun State is the APCs stronghold, not Lagos. One will remember that while President Goodluck Jonathan won in other South-Western States in 2011, he lost in Osun State. Osun State has being seen by many as the model APC state and an upset there will have set the tone for the beginning of the end for the APC.

With yesterday’s results where the APC was able to amass just 58% of the total votes cast, it is clear that the myth of invincibility surrounding the APC is going. Not gone yet.

The PDP is not finished in the South-West

As  seen in the Ekiti elections, the PDP has shown that it is far from finished in the South-West. Even with the massive defections of influential stalwarts like Alhaji Isiaka Adeleke, Olagunsoye Oyinlola and so on, the PDP put up a good fight against the APC and ended up with little bruises on their face after the battle with Aregbesola.

Iyiola Omisore is finished politically

After his famed trial for the alleged murder of Late Chief Bola Ige, Iyiola Omisore has somewhat become a political liability. Many are of the opinion that the PDP erred greatly by presenting Omisore as their Gubernatorial candidate. Infact, many believe the PDP might have stood a chance of winning had they presented a more presentable candidate. All these boils down to the fact that Iyiola Omisore has little or nothing to offer politically. Hugely uncharismatic, perceived as arrogant and with his seemingly irredeemable image, many are of the opinion that it is high time he called time on his political career.

Structures win elections

Fatai Akingbade is a force to reckon with in the Osun politicsphere but he suffered an embarrassing defeat to Aregbesola as he was not even close. Many will ask: Why did such a popular candidate suffer such a heavy loss despite his perceived influence? STRUCTURES will be the obvious answer. Had he run on the platform of the PDP or APC, who have well-oiled structures, he will have been a force to reckon with but unfortunately, he ran on the platform of the Labour Party which has a virtually inexistent structure in the state.

Goodluck Jonathan will win the 2015 elections

One of the permutations of the political seers is that Goodluck Jonathan will lose heavily in the APC controlled states come 2015. Well, this might not be the case. Going by the performance of the impressive performance PDP who presented a flawed candidate, the President can be rest assured that he will win the required 25% in many of those states the political seers expect him to lose.

  1. And your writing just finished the poor man’s career

  2. Fair analysis. PDP haven’t done badly indeed despite the recent defeat.
