A 26-year-old resident of Ilorin, Zainab Usman, has successfully gotten out of a physically-abusive marriage.
On Wednesday, 10 September, an Ilorin Area Court in Kwara, dissolved her three-year-old marriage with Lawal Usman, over claims of constant beating.
Zainab pleaded with the court to end her marriage to Lawal, saying he was too aggressive and regularly beat her up.
She disclosed to the court that her husband got easily angered at the slightest provocation, also adding that their marriage was contracted in 2011 and had yet to produce any child.
“My husband beats me unnecessarily, at times with his belt. My Lord, I want an end to this marriage because I cannot continue to live with a man that beats me every day,” Zainab said.
The defendant had no objections to the request of his wife. He asked the court to grant her desire, saying she was free to go as it pleased her.
He said, “My wife always provokes me to beat her and I have no apology for beating her.”
Mr Yusuf Abdulkareem, the presiding Judge, dissolved the marriage and issued a certificate of divorce to the plaintiff.
