Adeiye Temitope: The woman-killer and her beautiful exit (POETRY)

Warm blood gushing out, running over one’s palms felt good.

That was her first thought as she plunged the knife repeatedly into his neck.

She should’ve done this a long time ago, she thought.

The neighbors described her as a sweet young woman.

Respectful, always smiling.

But she wasn’t friendly with anyone in the area.

She had no friends of her own either.

But she wasn’t a troublemaker, they all agreed.

They were shocked by incidenct, no one would’ve thought she was capable of such darkness.

She who had been married to him for 6 years.

Who had had four pregnancies beaten out of her.

Who was currently nursing a half chewed off nipple.

Whose back sported welts from lashes of his belt.

Whose thighs had scars from extinguished cigarette butts.

Whose anus was sore from the bottle he forcefully inserted inside it.

She whose husband loved causing her pain; whose pleasure was hinged on her pain.

She whose mother advised her to be patient and not annoy him so much.

She who had decided to escape this life.

When the police came, they were more shocked by the woman-killer than the gory site of the bloody corpse.

She had made the call, she said there was an emergency and she gave her address.

They met her calmly seated, as though she was expecting a friend, or a lover.

She was elegantly dressed, with makeup flawlessly applied; red lips really did suit her.

She calmly, cooly, stretched her wrists forward to be handcuffed.

The police officers agreed they’d never seen anything so bizarre.

She smiled smugly as she was led into the police van.

She would never make it to the police station.

She had already ingested a healthy dose of cyanide before calling the police.

She was happy, she had done it, freedom at last!

She closed her eyed and slipped into eternal sleep with a contented smile on her face.

Elegantly dressed, perfumed and made up.

Her exit was beautiful, even though her life journey was anything but.
