The former first lady’s visit to the award ceremony was occasioned by Chance‘s acceptance of the BET Humanitarian Award.
Chance, 24, is now the youngest recipient of the award.
He said, “I didn’t prepare a speech because I wanted to speak from my heart. I’m 24 and to be receiving something like this at my age feels good as hell,” said Chance.
“It doesn’t feel deserved yet, but my God is putting the pressure on me so I can become who I’m supposed to be. I’m a good man and I’m going to become a better man.”
Michelle Obama delivered a taped video message, addressing the musician and celebrating his accomplishments.
“With these passionate efforts, Chance is showing our young people that they matter, that they have something inside of them that is worthy of being expressed, and they have so much to contribute to their community and our country,’ she said.
“I can’t think of no better legacy to leave, and I am thrilled to celebrate you here to tonight and honored to call you my friend.”
