2 possible reasons why Tinubu shunned APC NEC meeting

Conspiracy theorists and political watchers have gone to work to ascertain why National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, was absent from the National Executive Council meeting of the party.

Another party chieftain and Tinubu’s close associate, Bisi Akande, was also absent.

But Tinubu’s absence is not that far-reaching, and from all indications- there are two possible reasons.

First Reason;

Although Tinubu is a national leader of the party, he has no elected position and he’s therefore not expected to be present at the NEC meeting, going by the constitution of the APC.

Despite the fact that no official reason was given or statement released to explain his absence, National Publicity Secretary of the party, Lai Mohammed, shed some light into the matter.

While addressing journalists after the meeting on Friday, Mohammed said he did not know why Tinubu was not present, but however, added that he was not a member of the party’s executive.

He said: “If you look at our constitution, neither of them are members of the excos of the party. I think it is at the discretion of the NWC or NEC whom to invite or not. I don’t want to fathom more reasons why they are not here but like I said neither of them are members of the exco of the party.”

Second reason;

On Thursday, a day before the meeting, it came to the fore that some party stakeholders including some former governors had vowed to storm the NEC meeting if Tinubu, who does not hold a constitutional office in the party, was allowed to attend.

The ex-governors as well as some Northern leaders were of the opinion that the crisis in the National Assembly is being championed by the South-west chapter of the party and Tinubu’s presence would not allow for their to be a resolution.

The anti-Tinubu party stakeholders insisted that the former Governor of Lagos is not a member of the NEC and also that the constitution of the APC does not recognise the position of National Leader, and as such, he shouldn’t be present at the meeting.

The former governors were said to have decided to force their way into the venue of the meeting if Tinubu, who is also one of them, is allowed access into the NEC meeting.

There is a high possibility that one of these two reasons is behind the failure of Bola Tinubu to show up at the NEC meeting.
