BREAKING: Gbajabiamila is 9th House of Reps Speaker, defeats Bago by wide margin

The lawmaker representing Surulere Federal Constituency 1 of Lagos in the National Assembly, Femi Gbajabiamila has been elected as the Speaker of the 9th House of Representatives.

Gbajabiamila, Majority Leader in the 8th Assembly scored a total of 281 votes of the 358 votes cast to defeat his only opponent and fellow party member, Mohammed Umar Bago representing Chanchanga Federal Constituency of Niger, who scored 77 votes.

The 56-year-old lawyer was first elected as a member of the National Assembly in 2003 under the platform of the Alliance for Democracy, was re-elected to the House in 2007 under the platform of then Action Congress (AC) and was made Minority Whip of the House, ending his second term as the legislator who had sponsored the highest number of Bills in the National Assembly.

In 2011, on return to the National Assembly for a 3rd term, Gbajabiamila was made the leader of the opposition in the House, a position he held until he was made the Majority Leader of the House in the 8th Assembly (2015-2019) following his loss to former Speaker, Yakubu Dogara in the Presiding officers’ election of June 2015.

Once again re-elected to the lower chamber in 2019, he was adopted by his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) as its candidate for the seat of Speaker of the Green Chamber
