British couple who enslaved Nigerian for 2 decades, sent to jail

Emmanuel and Antan Edet have been jailed for six years each by a London court, after being found guilty of enslaving a Nigerian immigrant for over two decades.

Back in November, the Edets were convicted for child cruelty, slavery and assisting in illegal immigration.

The couple brought their victim into Britain in 1989 as a 14-year-old, and turned him to their personal slave, ever since.

During the trial, the prosecution revealed that the victim was forced to work long hours without pay and was also threatened with deportation if he attempted to escape.

For over 24 years, the enslaved man received no education while the couple took his passport and failed to process identity documents for him.

The man, who is now 40, was forced to cook, clean, garden and take care for the couple’s children for up to 17 hours a day.

Emmanuel and Antan were also inhuman in their treatment of him, as he made to eat alone and usually slept on the floor of the hall.

The British-Nigerian couple were on Monday, sentenced at Harrow Crown Court in northwest London.

Damaris Lakin, the prosecutor said the victim ‘believed this and felt trapped and completely dependent on the Edets. Emanuel and Antan Edet have cruelly robbed this victim of 24 years of his life.”

They have treated him with complete contempt. This was a shocking case of modern-day slavery.”
