President Buhari never said he would marginalize certain parts of the country

While asked by a journalist how he intended to deal with issues in the Niger Delta, particularly Amnesty, bunkering and inclusive development, the President more or less implied that focusing on one particular region would be contradictory to the promise he made when he was sworn in, when he said ‘I belong to everybody, I belong to no one’.

I hope you have a copy of the election result. Naturally constituencies for example that gave me 97 per cent cannot in all honesty be treated on some issues with constituencies that gave me 5 per cent. I think these are political realities, while certainly there will be justice for everybody , everybody will get his constitutional right but were the party in constituencies that by their either sheer hard work they make sure that they got their people to vote and ensure that their vote count, they must feel that the government has appreciated the effort they put in putting the government in place. I think this really fair.

By the constitution no state can be excluded from government, so there is no way even if I want to show gratitude to those constituencies that heavily voted for me against those that didn’t even vote for me, they have the protection of the constitution of the government and I made an undertaking that I belong to everybody, I belong to nobody. If I come clearly and show and marginalise a certain group because they didn’t vote for me, I have already contradicted myself and I am sure people will be too quick to pick that against me.

  1. teaching us how to read but what to understand, shameful!!!!!

  2. Some irresponsible journalists or should I say wanna be journalists took some part of the President’s speech and quoted him out of context. My first reaction was that of disappointment until I read the full response as here published. This is more in line with President Buhari’s pledge during his inaugural speech
