As the tenure of Ayo Oritsejafor, President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), winds down, a wave of fresh crisis has hit the organization- regarding his replacement.
The Catholic church has allegedly threatened to pull out of CAN if the crisis isn’t resolved.
According to Vanguard, reports indicate that the candidate of TEKAN/ECWA bloc, Jeremiah Gado, who is said to be the preferred candidate of federal government and Catholic church, has allegedly dragged CAN to court for unlawfully denying him an opportunity to participate in the election.
However, the court has ruled that all parties involved in the case be served and notified that they should appear before it on Tuesday.
The Christian body is expected to hold its election on Tuesday.
The electoral council of the body had screened and approved two candidates: Rev. Samson Olasupo Ayokunle of the Baptist Convention and Prof. Joseph Otubu of the Organization of African Instituted Churches (OAIC).
The Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN) and the Christian Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria/Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (CPFN/PFN) failed to present any candidate for screening and possible election.
About 309 members of the CAN national executive council will cast their votes to elect a new CAN President whenever the election eventually holds.
