On Monday, hip-hop lost one of its most influential figures from the 1990s. Chris Kelly, one half of the popular rap duo Kris Kross, was pronounced dead  at the age of 34 after being transported to a local hospital in Atlanta when he was found unresponsive at his home. A toxicology report is not expected for another  three to four weeks. It is believed the report will reveal the cause of death, according to Betty Honey of the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office. Honey said an autopsy performed on Kelly did not show signs of trauma or foul play.

A woman who described herself as a friend of Kelly told investigators at the hospital that he’d consumed a mixture of cocaine and heroin on Tuesday night. She said she’d brought Kelly home to “recover from his drug use,” according to a police report. Leslie Tookes, a neighbor of Kelly, was understandably saddened by his death. ”We often heard him playing classical music and the piano,” Tookes said. “He was a low-key type of person who was very talented and courteous, friendly and wonderful to our 5-year-old twins. Indeed, gone too soon.”

Following his death, Kelly’s family released a statement: “To millions of fans worldwide, he was the trendsetting, backwards pants-wearing one-half of Kris Kross who loved making music. But to us, he was just Chris — the kind, generous and fun-loving life of the party.” The music industry seems to be one of few industries where drug abuse is widely accepted and promoted. Rapper Lil Wayne, for example, oftentimes brags about the codeine-laced beverage in his cup on records and has openly discussed using cocaine, stating the drug gives him acne. Although he attributes his recent struggle with seizures to a medical condition, it is widely believed his drug abuse triggers his seizures.
