Messi set to become Argentina’s all-time highest goalscorer (WATCH)

Lionel Messi has come a goal closer to become Argentina’s all-time No.1 marksman after reaching Gabriel Batistuta‘s goal-scoring record in Argentina’s 4-1 win over Venezuela in the Copa America Centenario.

Messi scored one in his side’s victory to equal the legend’s 54-goal record.

He is now the top goalscorer in the Copa America with his fourth goal of the tournament.

The Barcelona striker could surpass Batistuta when Argentina take on the United States on Wednesday for a place in the finals.

Messi set up Gonzalo Higuain to put Argentina in the lead eight minutes into the match.

The Napoli forward netted his second goal of the match 20 minutes later by taking advantage of a Venezuelan defensive mix up.

Messi grabbed his 53rd international career goal after a Nicolas Gaitan pass put him through as he poked the ball home.

Venezuela got a consolation goal through a Salomon Rondon effort but Messi once again provided an assist to ensure a comfortable win.
