Copa America: ‘Hand of God’ knocks out Brazil (WATCH)

Brazil has been knocked out at the group stage of the Copa America Centenario after losing 1- 0 to Peru in controversial circumstances.

Dunga’s men fell victim to a fatal error from referee Andres Cunha who awarded a clear handball from Peru’s Raul Ruidiaz.

2015’s semifinalist Peru secured a place in the quarterfinals ahead of Brazil in Group B as Ruidiaz scored a contentious winner in the 75th minute.

Replays showed that the substitute had made use of his hand to push Andy Polo’s cross to hit the ball into the net at the Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

Due to protests from the Brazil fans and players, referee Andres Cunha had a five minutes consultation with his linesman after which he then stood with his first decision to award the goal.

Elias almost saved Brazil’s blushes only for him to fail to score inside the six-yard box with three minutes remaining on the clock.

Ecuador’s 4-0 demolition of Haiti sealed Brazil’s fate.

This is the first time since 1987 that the Pentacampeões have not gone past the group stage.
