An NGO working to improve the access to clean water in rural communities in Nigeria, Waterease Organisation, have successfully handed over a borehole to Dasham Community in Bauchi State.
The handover ceremony which took place on the 29th of June 2021 in Dasham, had in attendance the entire leadership of the village, who took turns to express profound gratitude to Waterease for coming to their aid. Before now, community residents, mainly women and girls, spent significant time trekking to fetch poor quality of water from streams. Taking away time that may have been used for economic or educational purposes, and exposing themselves to health risks.
The Executive Director of Waterease, Mmekidmfon Umanah, thanked World Connect for funding the project and TASTE Nigeria for offering technical support on the project. He stated that water is life and the importance of ensuring everyone has access to clean water cannot be overemphasised.
He mentioned that the quality of water the organisation met on their visit to the community was just preposterous and that as an organisation it was a thing of joy to be able to change that narrative and bring a smile to the faces of so many people.
He observed however, that there are several other communities like Dasham that need help and hence charged the government to take steps to tackle the issue of water across the country.
