Davido on Jimmy Fallon, Rema on Jimmy Kimmel, maybe the pandemic has a silver lining

Davido

Until the Coronavirus pandemic began and disrupted the media industry, we took for granted just how many people it took to produce even the simplest shows. Multiple camera men manning multiple camera angles, gaffers, sound engineers, lighting, set design, styling, costume design, make up and grooming, the list is exhaustive. Once it became unsafe to continue to operate these large crews, many late night talk shows were forced to pare down to a skeletal team, some quarantining with the hosts of the show in their homes while they continued to shoot stripped down versions of their popular shows. Two things happened, the first was that it became obvious people weren’t as  insistent on status quo as we had been made to believe, the second was that you really didn’t have your guest in the same room with you to produce a compelling show. This little change essentially opened up day time and late night talk shows to guests from all over the world, as they no longer had to restrict themselves to the complex and often expensive process that comes with having to traditionally book a guest for an interview or performance slot. That is how we got Rema and Davido perform on major night time shows in the same week.

Davido has had a stellar performance run promoting his last album, A Good Time. A true crossover album after two previous attempts, Davido has the ear and the attention of the Nigerian diaspora and the high powered collaborations to prove it. It makes sense that he would eventually make an appearance on Jimmy Fallon, but to do it on his own terms with his own set (created by art design duo Anti-Design), and a medley of his own choosing, these are the kind of opportunities for self expression that show the pandemic isn’t all bad.

But we get a two for one special, when Rema got featured on the Jimmy Kimmel Show’s Up Next showcase segment. A little late considering, Rema has been ruling the charts and properly crossed over late 2019, but deserved none the less.
