Day 13: Countdown to Aisha Buhari’s apology #DoYouRemember

Update: Looks like everyone has moved past the rift.

But let’s talk about how Mrs Aisha Buhari may actually the world’s best scandal squasher.

We were thinking about how those aprokos were on her case last week about #TheHandshake. And it suddebly dawned on us that there might actually be a cabal somewhere just on stand-by waiting to turn her every move into a scandal.

A particular episode in April came to mind.

They were tagged “concerned stakeholders” and they were a group of members of the Kogi chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Led by Chief Dare Mayegun, they accused the wife of the President of having a suspicious relationship with the Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello.

At the time there were ongoing petitions against the declaration of Bello as winner of the Kogi governorship elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) so it was bound to be news that the President’s wife was visiting with Yahya Bello anyway.

What no one could have expected is people making outrageous claims of a suspicious relationship. Their suspicions were raised because Aisha Buhari allegedly sat together in the first class cabin for a lengthy discussion on the return flight from London.

They had details o

“We are shocked to hear that Mrs Aisha Buhari and Alhaji Yahaya Bello sat together on the same flight from London to Abuja. They were on BA (British Airways) 082 which departed 22:40hrs on 7th April and arrived Abuja by 4.45hrs on the 8th of April. They departed at 2240hrs and arrived at 4.45hrs First Class cabin.”

These were their questions:

  • “What was First Lady, Aisha Buhari, discussing with Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State aboard British Airways flight from London to Abuja on Friday?
  • “Was the governor trying to use her to get ‘a soft landing’ through presidential powers at the Kogi State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal?
  • “Was it right for the wife of President Muhammadu Buhari to be discussing with the Kogi governor ‘at length’ in the first class cabin of the plane when a matter against him is still in court?
  • “What type of message is President Muhammadu Buhari sending out when his wife is seen openly strategising with a litigant?
  • “Is it a matter of ‘help me out of my judicial crisis and I will rub your back with contracts?”

What did Aisha Buhari say in response?

Of course nothing.

She must make it so hard for people bent on shaping stories about her life and actions. Really, how do you forge ahead when the ‘victim’ of your plots clearly is not distressed about all the scheming?

If there’s any takeaway from the recent spotlight on the President’s wife, it’s how to handle the haters.
