Y! Scoop: D’banj goes into music business, speaks on his landmark deals with Apple, Slot (READ)

After a five-hour endless wait by journalists due to a ‘supposed’ lack of adequate communication between the communications team on ground and the artiste, D’banj finally arrived at the cinema hall of the Ikeja City Mall (ICM) to show a select crowd, a visual EP titled An Epic Journey, which he says, has been in the works for two years.

D’banj took the time to apologise fervently to the waiting crowd of reporters for his lateness and then proceeded to give a brief introduction on what An Epic Journey is all about.

He said: ”This is something that I thought about in 2014, when I was actively involved in the charity organizations and I was not in the country and was reading what people were saying about me. Some were asking where is D’banj? Is he a farmer now? What’s happening? So I thought about something and I am not the first person doing it- Beyonce did it with her last album- she released all her music videos at once.”

Album Front

An Epic Journey visual EP is a compilation of 8 music videos shot in different parts of the world in a movie-like format featuring already released hits such as Feeling the N***a remix featuring Akon, Confidential featuring British-Ghanaian actor/DJ, Idris Elba and more.

Cropped Dbanj

D’banj also divulged details of his new business relationship/ambassadorship with major mobile phone retailer, Slot and the launch of a records-selling idea for the entertainment industry.

He said their partnership would see him set up what he called the ‘DKM media stand’ in every Slot retail store where artistes would have the opportunity to sell physical copies of their albums.

D’banj said: ”When I signed with Slot, a lot of people didn’t understand why. It was more for me as a partnership and we are coming out with something in 2016 which is the DKM media stand.

“Why I said this is because in October 2014, I got my Apple deal (Beats by Dre) and when I was about to bring the merchandise into the country, the first question Jimmy asked me is ‘Do you guys have this Beats by Dre in Nigeria’? I said ‘Yes but I don’t know if you guys have distribution directly in Nigeria and we have such a big market’.

That’s when it struck me and I said if you can design one for me and I can go and look for my own distribution, I’ll be able to bring my own line into the country. So that’s where the idea came from.”

“I want people who say Alaba is the only key to distribution, to see that beyond Alaba that we have another form of distribution right in our front because if you walk into any media store abroad, they sell CDs and DVDs.”
