Death toll in Puerto Rico doubles after Trump’s visit

In a shocking development, the number of death recorded as a result of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico has risen to 34 , Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello announced Tuesday evening.

Prior to his announcement and even during the briefing with President Trump yesterday in Puerto Rico, the number of fatalities was said to be 16.

The situation on ground after the battering of the category 4 Hurricane Maria which made landfall on Sept. 20 is extremely pitiable as most of the island residents still scramble to get water.

Only 47 per cent of the island’s water customers have access to potable water, and are without power and cell service.

Trump’s remark after the briefing assured Puerto Ricans of a continued government effort and a definite restoration of the island.

He had said officials “can be proud” of the relatively low death toll on the island in comparison with Hurricane katrina which struck the US gulf coast in 2005.

Trump in addition engaged flew through the island to access the extent of damage and Gov Rosello said he believes the president understands the level of devastation.
