Despite a ‘minor cholera outbreak’, Nasarawa is working to prevent Ebola

by James Sambo

The Nasarawa State Government has announced new measures to prevent an outbreak of the Ebola Virus Disease, EVD, in the state.

At a press conference at the state Ministry of Health along Jos Road, Lafia, Commissioner for Health, Emmanuel Akabe, said despite the fact the state was still free from the disease, adequate measures have been put in place to prevent and contain it in case of any eventuality.

Mr. Akabe, who added that the state was only facing a minor cholera outbreak, said that the state has already started sensitisation workshops and media campaigns to enlighten the public on the possible ways of preventing the disease. Plans were on ground to take the campaign to various higher institutions of learning and traditional institutions in the state, and Nasrawa has procured a handful of personal protective materials and ordered a brand new ambulance with life-saving gadgets.

Mr. Akabe said an isolation centre with a 50-bed capacity had been set aside in Lafia to cater for patients with the disease. According to the commissioner, the state government has also designated Federal Medical Centre, Keffi and Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital Annex to serve as isolation centres.
