The 20-year-old marriage between Bosede Tito and her husband, Segun, has been dissolved by an Ake Customary Court in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, over constant maltreatment.
According to the judge, Olalekan Akande, the marriage was dissolved after efforts to reconcile the couple failed.
He added that their six children were grown ups and capable of determining who to live with between both parents.
He also ordered that the children’s welfare be the joint responsibility of both parents.
Nigerian Tribune reports:
Akande further warned Segun to refrain from going to Bosede’s house or place of work to foment trouble.
Forty-seven-year-old Bosede, who lives at Aro, Abeokuta, had urged the court to dissolve her marriage to Segun due to maltreatment, lack of care, frequent beatings and threat to her life.
“I am fed up with our marriage; I have been patient enough and praying that one day, God would change him.
“He’s just too harsh. He maltreats me and our children. Whenever he fights me, he injures me.
“There was a time he fought me and beat one of our children who cautioned him when he was beating me. He broke my head and that of our daughter with a stone.
“This is not the first time he will be harming us.
“My husband doesn’t act like a responsible man. He doesn’t leave money for the family’s upkeep or bother about our welfare, all he knows is to womanise.
“I struggle daily to meet the family’s needs and ensure our children don’t go wayward like their father,’’ Bosede said.
She urged the court to grant her custody of their children in order to give them adequate care.
Segun denied all the allegations and pleaded with the court not to dissolve their marriage.
“I am imploring this court not to diccolve our marriage, but if she insists on a divorce, then there’s nothing I can do.
“But I want the court to grant me custody of our children because in my culture, a woman doesn’t have right to the children,’’ he stated.
