The DSS appears to have killed a man for nothing – and his family isn’t having it

A man suspected to be the friend of a suspect wanted by the Department of State Services in Lagos state has been allegedly tortured to death while in the custody of the state security service.

The man, Eyitayo (surname withheld), was not arrested for being a criminal but rather for being the friend of a wanted criminal.

The DSS had wanted to arrest a certain Rilwan for cloning government functionaries’ mobile numbers but had arrested his closest friend, the deceased, when he could not be found.

The brother of the deceased said “We suspect foul play. The DSS did not inform the family until April 23. Why did they hide his death from us? Every time I went there, they said the official handling the matter was not around and I could not see Damilare (Eyitayo).”

Eyitayo is believed to have died in DSS custody after collapsing under the weight of intense torture before April 6, the family lawyer, Babs Animashaun has requested for a coroner’s inquest.
