A New Orleans man who found himself threatened by a robber wielding a shotgun got the upper hand by seizing the weapon and using it to bash in the thief’s car window.

The attempted robbery took place Saturday morning around 5:05 a.m. The victim was walking down the street talking on his phone when the suspect approached him.The suspect pointed a shotgun in the victim’s face and demanded money, according to BayouBuzz.com.

Instead, the victim grabbed the suspect’s gun and chased him away.

But the blundering thief wasn’t gone for good.

Moments later as the victim walked away, two men drove up in a black four-door sedan and the driver said, “Give me my gun back and I’ll give you your phone that you dropped,” officials from the New Orleans Police Department told WWLT-TV.

The victim struck the rear windshield with the shotgun, causing it to break, police told the station.

The car then took off down the street.

Homeowner Joe Bonda recorded the incident on a surveillance camera and hopes it can help police.

“I hope they can get the license plate off of one of the cameras,” Bonda told Fox8Live.com. “If the police can improve the video enough to get the number off the plate, then that would be great.”

Investigators say the gunman was described as a black male, approximately 16-20 years of age, 6-feet-tall with a thin build wearing a black hat and a black t-shirt.

Police are hoping someone will recognize the armed robber from the video and contact Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111. A similar armed robbery took place the night before in the same area and police believe the same crooks might have been involved.
