The resurgence of the dispute between Afrobeat’s legendary duo P-Square has prompted us to revisit their discography, and we are once again reminded of the talent and diversity their artistry displayed.
In this article, we list 10 P-Square songs that not only became the biggest hits in the Nigerian music scene but should also be included in the hall of fame of Nigerian music.
- Get Squared
“Get Squared” is one of P-Square’s tracks that easily tells us about the inspiration behind their music. This was the most obvious hip-hop song ever released by the Afrobeat duo. It was released in 2005 as part of their second studio album and is one of the most popular P-Square songs amongst dancers and one of their most successful songs internationally.
- Do Me
Released in 2007 as part of their third studio album, Do Me is one of the biggest P-Square songs. In the years after it was released, it became one of the most popular club and party songs, and even now, almost two decades later, it’s one of the most beloved Y2K tracks to date and is still revered as one of the biggest Nigerian pop tracks.
- No One Like You
If you grew up around older Nigerians in love, you most likely heard this song many times. This song was one of the most popular wedding tracks during the early 2000s, and it is still a staple in Nigerian weddings; it is also one of the group’s vocally inclined songs. It is impossible to mention songs from P-Square that should be in a hall of fame without mentioning this 2007 track.
- Ifunaya
P-Square released a lot of romantic songs during their time, but Ifunaya was one of their tracks where they were able to combine romantic lyrics with a beat perfectly designed to be a party track. It was also released in 2007 as part of “Game Over,” their third studio album.
- E No Easy
Are you a P-Square fan if you don’t know “E No Easy”? This 2009 track captured the hearts of Nigerians of all demographics. From the religious people who viewed it as a thanksgiving sound to the partygoers who enjoyed bopping to the beat, it is easily a P-Square Hall of Fame track.
- Danger
“Danger” by P-Square is one of the greatest Afrobeat tracks in history. Don’t believe us? Ask anyone about the lyrics of the 2009 track, released as a part of the fourth studio album. The song further popularised one of Nigeria’s most popular slogans, “Wahala dey,” and to date, it is still one of the most influential classic songs out of Nigeria.
- Chop My Money
“Chop My Money” was released in 2011 and became one of the most successful tracks of the decade. It was such a great hit that even its remix featuring Akon and May D received so much attention and praise from fans both in Nigeria and globally. This track contributed to the exportation of Afrobeat to a global audience.
- Beautiful Onyinye
This is one of P-Square’s most popular songs internationally, partly due to the remix with Rick Ross, but also the romantic vibe of the song made it one of the greatest romantic Afrobeat songs. It was released in 2011, and even now it is still one of the most popular tracks at Nigerian weddings. To us, “Beautiful Onyinye” deserves to be in the hall of fame not just for P-Square tracks but also for romantic Afrobeat songs.
- Collabo
“Collabo” was a big hit when it was released, as it featured three of Afrobeat’s biggest names at the time. Don Jazzy’s presence on the song, with his signature style, made this song popular among Nigerians. It is impossible to mention the best P-Square songs without mentioning this 2014 hit.
- Roll It
Just like the track says, “As we step into the club,” this track was one of the biggest club hits of its time. It helped cement P-Square’s status as one of the most experimental artists in Nigeria. The duo were never afraid to try different sounds, and just like with “Roll It,” they were always able to do it successfully.
