#Ebola: Police and protesters clash in Spain over killing of Ebola victim’s dog

by Temitope Onitiju

Spanish Police and animal rights protesters have reportedly clashed outside the building where the nurse who got infected with Ebola lives, over the planned killing of the victim’s dog.

The animal rights group, want the Spanish mixed-breed dog, Excalibur, to be allowed to live, but the government is determined to have it put down, citing the possibility of the animal having been infected with the virus.

Madrid’s regional government had insisted that it would kill the pet dog of the nursing assistant who became infected with Ebola, despite objections by the family.

The nursing assistant was the first person infected outside of West Africa, after taking care of a Spanish priest who died of Ebola in September.

The government said that the dog will be euthanized in a way to avoid suffering and its body incinerated.

Meanwhile, the husband of the nurse, who is also under quarantine, posted the dog’s photo on Facebook and denounced the move.

He wrote, “I think it’s unfair that for a mistake they made they now want to solve it this way. If they are so worried with this issue I think we can find another type of alternative solution, such as quarantining the dog and put him under observation like they did with me. Or should they sacrifice me as well just in case?”
