Mrs. Fatima Bankole, a 34-year old woman was brutally beaten by her husband, Alhaji Kamoru Bankole, simply because she took a piece of fish from the pot on 16 July.

Fatima, who is the first of Kamoru’s three wives was battered by her husband after the third wife reportedly told him that she took a big piece of fish from the soup to add to her food as she wanted to break her fast.

According to the victim, her husband was in the habit of beating her regularly but the beating of that fateful day was the worst she had experienced. On that day, Mrs. Fatima said the last wife had finished her cooking and had served the husband and the children, so she proceeded to serve her own meal.

Not long after, the last wife complained to her husband that Fatima took a larger chunk of the fish in the pot.

Their husband sought an explanation from her, and she replied saying that the fish was in pieces and mixed up in the stew. However, her explanations got her little reprieve as Alhaji Bankole dealt her several blows to the face.

She said she bled for hours and was also locked up in a room for three days before she managed to escape. She was then taken to the hospital, where her injuries required 26 stitches.

Following petitions by the Women Arise civil group in Lagos, the police have reportedly arrested the husband, who is due for arraignment in court next week.
