Falconets soar into World Cup semi-finals

by Stanley Azuakola

Nigeria’s female U-20 national team, The Falconets, has qualified for the semi-finals of the Women U-20 World Cup taking place in Korea. They became the first team to do so on Thursday, beating the Mexican U-20 team by a lone goal.

The goal came courtesy of a 109th minute header by Gloria Oparanozie in a highly competitive and entertaining game which went into extra time.

Nigeria will now face the winner of the match between Japan and Korea in the semi-finals.

It was a deserved victory for Nigeria, who dominated possession for most of the game and had many attempts blocked by the Mexican keeper. However, with no goal scored by either team at the end of 90 minutes, the game went into extra time. The only goal came in the second minute of the second half of extra time.

Goodluck to our girls (no pun intended.)
