A 34-year-old female gun-runner has been arrested by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad for selling guns to armed robbers.
A SARS team from Ikeja, Lagos, apprehended Sarah Emmanuel, the wife of a deceased notorious armed robber, who used to hawk wares before venturing into the illegal supply of arms to criminals.
Sarah, who is a mother of two, was arrested after she was implicated by some armed robbery suspects, who were initially apprehended by the SARS operatives. The robbery suspects had confessed to purchasing their guns from her, which led to her eventual arrest.
The suspect used to buy locally made guns from a border town between Benin Republic and Nigeria and re-sell to armed robbers.
Sarah gave her account of events which led to her arrest. She said, “I live in Sango Otta, I have two children; the first is 10 years old while the other is six. I am a trained hair dresser.
“I was arrested because my friend Modinat escaped. We have been friends for six years. She asked me to accompany her to Idiroko where she told me of her plan to purchase a gun for one Ismaila, her armed robber lover from whom she collected
N25,000. I only accompanied her to Ifonyin once. I am widow and my husband a border town between Nigeria and Benin Republic where we bought the gun for N15,000.”
“It was after Ismaila’s arrest by operatives of SARS that he confessed that he bought the guns from Modinat and I. When the officers went to arrest her she escaped and I was arrested her she escaped and I was arrested instead. I only accompanied her to Ifonyin once.”
Sarah pleaded for mercy, saying she would assist in the arrest of her partner-in-crime, if released by the police.
“I am a widow and my husband, who was an armed robber was killed by police, we were married for ten years but I didn’t know he was an armed robber before he was killed. My husband was actually killed two years ago during a robbery operation at Ilasa. Before I was arrested I was involved in street trading. If the police release me I will assist them to arrest my friend Modinat.”
