Fiery December: Fire guts Ondo FRCN station, shuts down operation

by Akan Ido
This season is turning out to be a fiery one as the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, Positive FM, station in Akure was yesterday gutted by fire.
Sources say the fire which destroyed many of the station’s vital equipments started around 6:40am when the station has barely commenced its daily transmission.
Just like the electrical fault which was said to have caused the fire which gutted a section of the former president Olusegun Obasanjo’s Hilltop mansion, the FRCN fire was caused by a switch in the engineering department.
The general manager, Olusegun Ayankoso, who conducted reporters round the damaged facilities, said the station would not be able to transmit because of the extent of the damage.
He reportedly  said, “Facilities like Automatic Voltage Regulator, audio cable, electrical cable, air conditioner and internet cables were destroyed by the inferno.
“The fire was put out by the people on duty who prevented it from escalating.”
Ayankoso added that firefighters arrived on time to save the situation.
The state commissioner for information, Kayode Akinmade, who was on hand to assess the extent of the damage described the development as “unfortunate”.
“The state government would assist the station to come back on stream as early as possible,” he said.
He also urged the Federal Government to rehabilitate the damaged facilities.
