In a video posted on his Facebook page, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and General Managing Director of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, Ibe Kachikwu, gave a simplified explanation for the fuel crisis in the country.
Wearing a simple shirt that was folded up to the elbow and looking tired and worn, Kachikwu explained that the fuel crisis was caused by:
1) The unavailability of foreign exchange for private marketers to import fuel into the country. The minister noted that the NNPC now imports 100 percent of the fuel products used in the country, against the normal 50 percent that the corporation used to import in the part. This over reliance on the NNPC to import fuel has caused a strain as the NNPC lack the resource, capacity and network to be the sole importer of fuel into the country.
2) Activity of pipeline vandals, who destroy oil installations around the control. Thus incurring more expense for the country and causing a difficulty in the distribution of fuel around the country.
The Minister, while calling on the public to help government insure fuel stability, also gave suggestions on how to resolve the crisis permanently.
